OCP Program Policy

Student Commitment

Regular attendance is expected and necessary for piano lessons to benefit any child. Students with excessive weekly absences can lose their weekly time slot if our master educators deem necessary.

Cancellations & Makeups

While educators at OC Piano Program are always happy to accommodate for schedule changes, lesson cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a forfeited lesson fee. Parents have the option to reschedule the lesson within the week or skip the week entirely.

Student Practice

All students are required to provide their own instruments for study. Students are encouraged to practice for shorter periods each day (as little as 5 minutes each day will make a difference for a beginner) rather than one longer session the day before the lesson. We encourage our parents to be supportive and lavish in their praise during practice.

Class Expectations

Parents are always consulted at the end of the lesson regarding any behavioral issues. All OC Piano Program students are expected to behave with the highest respect to our educators and other students (during recitals and competitions).

Lesson Location & Schedule

Our piano lessons take place right in the student’s home and we are able to serve students all over Orange County. No need to hassle with the commute or competing extracurricular activities! Families must work directly with their master educator on setting up a class time that fits their schedule.

Piano Lesson Structure

Piano lessons include finger exercises, solo piano pieces, and music theory education. The last few minutes of every piano lesson are reserved for communicating with parents. During this time, the parent will be informed of the methods and activities being used during the piano lessons so that these may be reinforced at home. Homework instructions & expectations will also be discussed at this time.

Tuition Payments

Monthly tuition listed above covers 4 weeks of tuition. For months with 5 weeks, families will be invoiced for the additional week of tuition. All tuition payments will be handled directly with your master educator. Families have the option of paying via check, Paypal, Venmo, and Zelle. A $25 late fee will be assessed for tuition payments received after the 15th of each month.

Charter School Vendor

Our master educators are approved vendors for Compass Charter Schools, Cabrillo Point Academy, Mission Vista Academy & Pacific Coast Academy. These students may use their enrichment funds towards their piano classes and materials.

Recitals

OC Piano Program hosts an exclusive Fall recital annually. Students have the opportunity to prepare and perform on these recitals as a celebration of their accomplishments during the year. Students are highly encouraged to participate.

Southern California Young Pianist Competition

Every Spring, OC Piano Program hosts the prestigious “Southern California’s Young Pianist Competition.” This annual event is designed to celebrate and encourage the highest level of artistic achievement among Orange County’s young pianists. Participation is based on invitation only.

In an Emergency

If OC Piano Program cancels due to an emergency, lessons will be cancelled. Families will be alerted of any change of plans as soon as possible via their preferred choice of communication. Parents have the option of rescheduling within the week or skipping entirely.

Children must be at least 6 years old to apply to our program.

For children under this age, we don’t recommend formal training yet. But we do highly recommend families continue to expose them to a variety of music genres & styles. This exposure primes the brain for active engagement & processing.

Our master educators are proud to offer both virtual and in-home piano lessons.  Our families can also opt for a hybrid structure, which allows for the quality, convenience & affordability services.

Yes, students will need their own piano or keyboard at home to practice.  We recommend beginner students start with an inexpensive digital piano or keyboard. Once the child shows serious interest and skill, families may choose to upgrade to a standard upright or grand piano.

We offer 30-minute piano lessons for our beginner-intermediate students  & 45-minute piano lessons for our intermediate-advanced students. For students on the MTAC & RCM track, 45-minute weekly lessons are necessary to prepare for the examinations.

Lessons are highly structured and follow curriculum. The first 5 minutes of every lesson is dedicated to reading notes and building music theory vocabulary. The next 25 minutes focuses on learning performance solos.

OC Piano Program offers an open door policy and families are free to stop lessons at any time. Please note that lesson cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a forfeited lesson fee. In addition, students that leave the program will no longer be eligible to re-apply in the future.

At the minimum, acoustic pianos should be tuned yearly. Annual maintenance not only improves the quality of sound, but also protects the internal components. Click here for our recommended list of piano tuners.
